Diaper Cover Styles
These notes are neither endorsements nor recommendations, simply an informal consensus of what we hear from customers and our authorized retailers. Your results with any particular diaper/cover/fabric may vary based on your baby's shape and size, diaper or cover changes, etc.
Pull on style diaper covers
Pull on style
- Simple to put on
- Generally fit over any style diaper
- Ranges from inexpensive nylon "pants" to more expensive wool soakers
- Unless equipped with some type of snaps, removing a soiled cover can be tricky without soiling baby's legs or clothes
- Good choice to use with for fitted diapers, as a good-fitting diaper should contain any mess; the cover is then primarily for a waterproof barrier
- With contour or prefold diapers, you will want to pin or otherwise secure the diaper before using a pull-on cover
Wrap style diaper covers
Wrap Style
- Flaps come around the front of the diaper cover to hold it in place with snaps or hook-and-loop closures
- Generally trimmest fitting covers
- Holds unpinned contour diapers in place better than other styles
- Make sure a wrap covers completely covers your diaper in three key areas:
- crotch width
- height/rise
- width/design of flaps as they cross over to the front of the cover
Side snap diaper covers
Side Snap Style
- Independent waist and leg snaps give excellent fit control
- Generally give very complete coverage of diapers, without much tucking or fussing involved
- Some styles are slightly roomier in fit ( "poofy") compared with wrap-style covers
